Non-Custodial Copy Trading — How It Works and Why It Matters
Non-custodial copy trading means you keep the keys to your funds — the platform only has trade-execution access. This guide explains the architecture, the security guarantees and how whale.ag implements it.
Non-Custodial Copy Trading: How It Works and Why It Matters
1. Connect your wallet
You connect with a self-custodied wallet (MetaMask, Rabby, Frame). The platform never sees your seed phrase.
2. Platform creates an agent wallet
whale.ag generates a dedicated wallet for your copy agent. It is non-custodial and is only used to place trades on your behalf — never to move your funds.
3. Fund the agent
You move USDC from your wallet to the agent wallet on-chain. You decide how much capital to allocate; you can withdraw it back at any time.
4. Approve trade-execution
You sign one approval that lets the agent place orders on Hyperliquid. The approval does NOT grant withdrawal — that stays under your control.
5. Agent trades, you monitor
The agent mirrors fills from your target trader. You see every fill, every fee, every drift adjustment in your dashboard.
6. Withdraw whenever
Move funds back to your main wallet at any time. No platform sign-off required, no withdrawal fee, no waiting period.
Frequently asked questions
Is non-custodial really safer than custodial?
Yes. With custody, the platform's insolvency = your loss. With non-custody, you control withdrawal. The platform can have an outage but it cannot lose your funds.
What can a non-custodial agent do if it is hacked?
It can place trades on Hyperliquid that lose money. It cannot withdraw funds to an attacker's wallet because withdrawal is gated by your wallet, not the agent. Worst case = trading losses, not theft.
Why does the agent need a separate wallet?
Separation of concerns. Your main wallet holds your full crypto position; the agent wallet holds only what you allocated to copy. If the agent has issues, only that allocation is at risk.
How do I know whale.ag can't move my funds?
You can verify on-chain that each copy agent has only trade-execution rights — never withdrawal rights. Your funds stay under your control at all times.
