How to Find Profitable On-Chain Traders (Without Falling for Vanity Metrics)
A practical framework to identify consistently profitable on-chain perpetual traders. Filter by Sharpe ratio, max drawdown, win rate and consistency — never raw PnL or follower count.
How to Find Profitable On-Chain Traders (Without Falling for Vanity Metrics)
1. Open whale.ag/leaderboard/hyperliquid
Start with the Hyperliquid leaderboard. It includes the largest pool of verified, on-chain perp traders.
2. Sort by Sharpe ratio, not raw PnL
Raw PnL favors size and luck. Sharpe ratio favors consistency. Look for Sharpe > 2.0 over a 90-day window.
3. Filter max drawdown < 20%
Max drawdown caps the worst-case scenario. Below 20% = the strategy has weathered volatility without blowing up.
4. Require minimum fill count
30+ fills means it is not just one or two lucky trades. 100+ fills means it is a strategy.
5. Inspect holding period and assets
Match the trader's style to yours. A 1-hour scalp strategy is hard to copy if you only check your phone twice a day. A 5-day swing is easier.
6. Cross-check with similar traders
Open the trader's page and click Similar traders. If their cohort is also profitable, the edge is more likely real than idiosyncratic.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just sort by PnL?
Raw PnL is dominated by account size and time-since-inception. A whale with $10M who is up 5% will appear above a 10x leveraged scalper who is up 200%. Sharpe ratio and max drawdown normalize for these biases.
What is a 'good' Sharpe ratio?
On-chain perpetuals: 1.0 is decent, 2.0 is good, 3.0+ is exceptional. Most professional crypto funds target 1.5-2.5 net of fees.
How do I avoid 'lucky' traders?
Require both a high Sharpe AND a long track record (>90 days) AND a high fill count (>50). Survivorship bias still exists, but those filters cut most noise.
Can I look at past drawdowns to predict future ones?
Partially. Past max drawdown is a useful lower bound on future risk, but it is not a guarantee. Use Calmar ratio (return / max drawdown) for a more nuanced view.
